Do you do art with your kids?

I LOVE getting crafty with my munchkins. I have an ongoing project that we work on once a year.  We have a weird little short hallway in our house that I have deemed "The Art Hall". Every year I buy some canvases when they are on sale then hoard them until a crazy day where I really feel like doing nothing. Seriously.  This started out as my  "I am about to go crazy from hearing the TV and I just want some quiet" craft.  I still use it for that, but I really love it as well!

I have a huge collection of acrylic paints, so if you are like me and stocked, this will probably cost less than $10 and you have a lifetime memory.  I LOVE watching their paintings progress through out the years!

Now time for the obscene amount of pictures.

Hard at work:

 Finished products!!
BFF's. You may not be able to read it, BUT there is a "yes"pointing to Blue Toad and a "No"  and an "X" pointing to Yellow Toad.  Nate had to make sure you were aware of this. Blue Toad for lyfe!

 Aidan hard at work.

Aidan painted Nate playing with a red ball.Last year he painted Nate as well.  I think we can figure out who Aidan's best friend is!

V simply painted "Everything"

Art hall!!! Completed for the year!  If you do this, make sure to label the back with what they name them and the date!  I think their names make the art!

Azure Naturals Ultimate C-Skin Repair Serum REVIEW!

In my quest for younger looking skin, you know I have been reviewing different Vitamin C Serums. The one I am telling you about today is Azure Naturals ULTIMATE C-Skin Repair Serum.

Review of "Shell Game" by Think Fun!

I have reviewed a few games for Think Fun in the past. You can see my review of Rush Hour Jr. HERE and Zingo Sight Words HERE.

When I saw they wanted me to review the Shell Game I was SUPER excited!
For some reason I remember watching movies as a kid where the "hustler on the street" hides something under a cup, you watch the cup as he switches them around, and then you pick which cup the item is under.  The person playing NEVER gets it right, the coppers come, and everyone runs off.

This is essentially the same minus the mean streets of New York, hustlers, and cops.

Seriously though.  SUPER fun.  You have 60 games, 6 hermit crabs, 6 sea shells, and 3 rocks.

When you first set up the game, it tells you along the top of the board how to set it up.  Here the hermit crab starts on the left and three rocks are next to it.  The goal is to make the board look like on the bottom of the page.  In the first game, the crab ends all the way on the right.  Sounds easy, right?
You cover the crabs and rocks with the shells and move the pieces.  You have to switch two at a time and you can ONLY switch two connected by a line.  Make sense? It didn't to me when I read it, but once we started playing it totally did.

The first few pages were EASY.  Aidan was all "This game is too easy!"

So we skipped a few pages.  THEN things got interesting.  As you see in the background, V is a shell theif.
Waaa waaa waaaaaa....he was all certain he got it.  NOPE.

At this point I was thinking "Pbbt.  I can do any of them."  I flipped to the expect level and set one up.  Yeah....that is hard!  It is definitely something that you need to concentrate on.  It is NOT a game to play when you have three kids fighting in the background. You really do need to use your memory on this game.  It gets really challenging the further you go in the booklet!

If you get really stuck there are pages in the instruction booklet that tell how to solve the puzzles.  I checked it out, but didn't read them.  I want to try to master the booklet on my own without the answers there.  I just need to find some quiet!

See, expert is NO JOKE.
If you are looking for a really good challenging game for older kids OR adults, you can purchase it on AMAZON. In addition to that site, they do sell it online HEREYou can check out their entire line of toys in their shop at ThinkFun.com

Sometimes I do reviews just because I have a feeling that some of my readers might be interested in hearing about a product.  While I am not the most religious of people, I know some family, friends, and readers are rather strong Christians.  So, I decided to review an item that might interest them!

Foxbrim Vitamin C Review

You might remember when I reviewed the Foxbrim Argan Oil.  If not, you can click that little link there.  Not only did they give me the opportunity to review the Argan oil, I also got to review a bottle of their vitamin C oil.

I have been a user of vitamin C oil for a while now as you know. I really enjoy this one. It sinks in well, non-greasy. My skin loves it!

This vitamin C oil is made from all-natural and organic ingredients. They claim it helps to hydrate and smooth the skin, give you a youthful glow, and reduce and diminish fine lines and wrinkles!

Since I have been using VItamin C for a while, I have noticed my skin is more hydrated. I also have noticed the little lines around my eyes  aren't as noticeable.  Super glad I have this one to put into my collection!  I might have a slight obsession with them.

Verilux Smart Light Desk Lamp for Learning review....AND GIVEAWAY!!!

I have been redoing my craft room/Great Grandma room for a while now.  It is kind of an office, but it had no ceiling light.  Weird, right? There is a light switch that works an outlet, so we had a lamp plugged into it when guests come that I took off of my sewing table.

Even though I had the lamp on the sewing table, it still is hard to sew at night.  With big craft shows coming up, I NEED to get work done.  With three kids home, lots of that sewing needs to happen at night.

I had the chance to review the Verilux SmartLight.  It is known as "the lamp for learning".

According to their site the light mimicks natural lighting which increases productivity!  It makes is easier to read, less eye strain, more focus, and great productivity.  Umm, score.

Research actually shows that:

Use of Verilux Natural Spectrum lighting, in a school setting, increased visual acuity (clarity and sharpness of letters) for over 88% of the study participants.  Clarity and preciseness is DEFINITELY something I need when sewing and crafting!

A study of full spectrum lighting in schools reported that students perform better, have higher rates of achievement and have less stress and improved attendance.

(SM Berman Phd, M Navvabb Phd FIES, MJ Martinc OD, J Sheedyd OD Phd and W Tithofe Phd , A comparison of traditional and high color temperature lighting on the near acuity of elementary school children, Lighting Res. Technol. 38,1 (2006) pp. 41-52. 2Hathaway, W.E.; Hargreaves, J.A.; Thompson, G.W.; Novitsky, D. (1992). A Study Into the Effects of Light on Children of Elementary School Age—A Case of Daylight Robbery. Alberta: Policy and Planning Branch, Planning and Information Services Division, Alberta Education)

So while this is fantastic for my vision while sewing, it is also amazing for students. With school coming up next month (yippee!) I know friends of mine are already posting pictures of back to school shopping.

Why not include a new desk lamp?  They come in graphite and white. The arm bends amazingly well.  I have actually inverted mine to shine up towards the ceiling when Eric needed to check something out.  They are very light and super bright!  I love mine!

The replacement bulbs are a bit oddly shaped, but able to be purchased on their site.
Want to try your luck and win one?  You can!  Good luck!  This contest ends midnight on the 24th.  I will post the winner as soon as I wake up.  I have to have the winners info to the company on the25th.  PLEASE....make sure you use an email you check on a regular basis.  If the winner hasn't responded by 5pmEST on July 25, I WILL draw a new winner!

StyloPhora Ice Ball Mold Review

I live in the south. In the south it is nothing for the temperatures to hit a 100F or more in the summer. Hydration is key during this time!  Nothing is worse though than grabbing a drink and either having it A-hot from the sun, or B-cold, but watered down due to ice melting in the drink.

When I saw these on a friend's blog, I kind of giggled, but them though about it.  They are rather awesome!  Behold StyloPhora Ice Ball Mold!

The ice takes longer to melt due to it's size.  This results in drinks staying colder longer and them not being watered down.  Also, I have wanted to try those colored ice balls that you see all over pinterest.  These would be perfect to make them in!  Ohh ohh!  What about balls with stuff frozen in them?  You could put a little trinket in it and then have the kids break them open to get the prize!  Hmmm....float in a bathtub?  See, tons of ideas.

For the purpose of the review, I went the normal ice ball route.  Picture time!

When you receive the item, the three balls, funnel, and instructions are all in a handy dandy tube for storage.

The spheres have a nice flat bottom, so they sit well on tables, or in your freezer.

To fill, you need to make sure the 2 pieces are put together very tightly (mine wasn't the first time...oops), extend the collapsible funnel, and insert it into the top.  The funnel fits into the top hole very snug. When filling, I found it easier to hold the funnel up a bit.  Otherwise, the water just backed up into the funnel.  No way for the air to escape that was inside the sphere!
Make sure to fill the ball up to the line. The extra room there is to ensure the water doesn't spill out while freezing.  Water expands, you know! Yeah....I went a bit over the line.
They take about 4 to 6 hours to freeze.  I left mine over night.  To get the sphere out, you have to twist the top a bit.  It is a tight fit! Same with the bottom. Twist it out!
 Cool, huh?  Pun totally intended.

HSI Professional Leave in Hair Treatment with Argan Oil Review and DISCOUNT!

Let's talk about Argan Oil. Specifically, HSI Professional Leave-In Hair Treatment with Argan Oil.

The other day I told you about my obsession with oil treatments as a kiddo and how it carried over into adulthood. I already had some argan oil, but decided, why not when the opportunity arose!

This treatment left my hair shiny and smooth without any greasiness.  It does have a scent to it which I can't place. Not baby powder, but not floral. It isn't strong, but not a scent I am used to in my hair. It smells good though!  It is a great leave in conditioner that keeps my curls frizz free!

To use the oil you just put a few drops in your hands and run it through your hair.  It helps to keep your hair protected when you blow dry and flat iron!  The ONLY thing I wish for is it to have a dropper of some sort.  I am always scared I will pour too much into my hands!

With this review they gave me some saving to pass onto you readers. If you are interested in trying some out for yourself you can order from either of these two links below.

Use this link for the 2oz bottle and use the code TBargan2 for 50% off!!!
Use this link for the 4oz bottle and use the code TBargan4 for 60% off!!

Awesome, huh?  I hope you have a great hair day!  I am!

What's Cookin' Wednesday!

I wasn't cookin' last week. Well, I did, but nothing too thrilling. This week I FINALLY got to sit down with my new Cooking Light magazine. So everything I am planning this week is BASICALLY from there.

Spiced Chicken thighs with Couscous.  I just realized I have all this on hand.  Totally making it tonight!

Cilantro Burgers with Sriracha Mayo
Garlic-Lime Grilled Corn

Sauteed Black Grouper with Peach relish.  I am probably doing halibut or cod.  Whatever the special is on Sunday.  What kind of side do you think goes with this?  Green beans, maybe?  Oooh.  Yeah.  Fresh green beans.

Grilled Corn, Crab, Asparagus Salad.  Probably using imitation crab to make it budget friendly.

Shrimp Cob Salad. Bacon will become turkey bacon.  I don't do tomatoes, so Eric can add them if he wants to.

Spicy Chicken Schawarma. I made chicken schawarma before and REALLY liked it.  Might as well have it again!

Kale and Carmelized Onion Grilled Cheese. I like kale. I like onions.  I like cheese.  Sounds like a winner to me!  I had to google raclette cheese.  I had no clue what it was. APPARENTLY it is a semi-firm cheese and you can substitute Gruyere cheese. I will be doing that.

A horror story for moms of big families

It was a Thursday night. I had just washed sheets and was trying to dry them before the kids went to bed.  For some reason, the sheet was dry, but the mattress pad was not. We chalked it up to it having that waterproof backing on it and thought nothing about it.  Threw it back in, told the boys to sleep in the same bed (they do that often) and restarted the dryer.

In the morning....still wet.  I took it out and thought "Huh.  Let me just start it and make sure it is getting hot.  It didn't.  The dryer was broken.

I proceeded to do a happy dance, because that meant I didn't have to do laundry!  Then reality set it when I walked by the overflowing hamper and realized that we were going on a trip the next week and needed clean underwear and socks.

I learned something. I am NOT Laura Ingles.  Hanging clothing to dry is not for me.  First, I don't have a clothes line.  Our HOA actually forbids them.  Our HOA is kind of a joke and the only thing they can enforce is that we pay them (contract issues makes the contract unenforceable)

My eldest dog Kenevil loves to hang out outside, but he is 12 and I hate him being in the sun that long, so we have one of those cheap tents on our porch.  The only way to do laundry was to hang it outside off of the tent.  Classy.

Doesn't sound too horrible, right?  Have you ever worn line dried underwear? It is hard and not comfy in the least bit.  Luckily I cloth diapered V and had a small drying rack so I could throw undies and socks on there. The idea of my undies flapping in the breeze was not something I wanted to come into reality.

For two weeks I had to line dry everything. TWO WEEKS. I did a load a day to keep it under control, but TWO weeks of doing laundry at 8am and having to plan it around the weather.  NOT FUN.

I enjoyed the "green" aspect of it.  I enjoyed automatically folding the clothing when it came off the hangers and making the boys put up their own clothes.

I did NOT enjoy hard undies and the fact that I couldn't wash big bath towels.  I had nowhere to hang them! I couldn't wash sheets!  How did people do laundry in the past with no dryers?  When winter came, did they never wash sheets?  Was their house full of hanging clothing?

This mom is so glad I finally have a dryer back.  I will never take that for granted again. Long live modern conveniences!

I think my new curse upon people will be "I hope your dryer breaks".  lol

What could you not live without?

Does Facebook make you want to beat your head a lot? It makes me want to!

I am on Facebook...a lot.  I admit it.  Sometimes I just sit on the couch and refresh.  No shame here!  It is my outlet to grownups...most of the time.

Today I read something on Facebook that I won't even link to for fear of giving the referring "news site" more clicks.  I WILL paraphrase though.

I am friends with TONS of people.  Black, white, gay, straight, Christian, Atheist, Pastafarian, I DON'T care. Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, whatever!  If I know you, I am probably your Facebook friend. I LOVE lively debates. Some people when I post certain things I KNOW they will comment on it ::cough cough Erin cough cough::

So today, it was no surprise when I saw an "OMG!!!!  Michelle Obama is taking Chick-fil-a out of school cafeterias!!!!"

Wait, what? Why the crap is it even IN the cafeteria.  Basically here is the article paraphrased:
  • ZOMGGGG!!!! Michelle Obama has no nutrition degree and is changing school lunches so "students not experience the tasty goodness that is Chick-fil-A" and "Department of Special Education will be made to suffer the loss of their main fundraiser for field trips"
Well....heaven FORBID they don't get to experience the tasty goodness. I mean MY GOSH.  How horrible for them.  And, the loss of field trip fundraisers?  I am PRETTY sure we have to pay for those field trips.  Isn't that what my $10 every single time I get one of those permission slips is for? If that school is different and PAYS for field trips, I want to go there!  Our school has plenty of fund raisers. I am sure they can figure it out.

On another website the principal of the school in question said   “I’ve never seen anybody come to high school thin and leave fat,” Browning added, “but we will sell what qualifies. It amounts to pine bark and flavored water, and it’s going to severely limit what kids will be able to buy during the school day.”

Seriously?  When do kids get overweight then? Also, pine bark and flavored water?  WIth the attitude that the principal is bringing to the school EVERYONE is going to hate it.  Why not embrace it? Why not talk about good choices and bad choices?

My Facebook friend was saying how schools get "tastless garbage" and his kids "come home hungry" I have eaten at Aidan and Nate's school. While it isn't 5star food, it isn't horrible. My recommendation to this friend (whose children don't even go to the school in question, yet was still up in arms, cause you know Obama is horrible---Psst...they AREN'T)  PACK YOUR KIDS LUNCH.

Isn't hard. Takes 10 minutes. You can do it the night before. If your kid is in high school THEY can do it.  I used to do it.

So...what are your thoughts on all this?  Do you agree with me or am I the crazy one?

Petbrosia releases Grain-Free Salmon! (Psst. Giveaway inside here!)

Do you see these guys here?

Can you guess why her tongue is out?   I just opened the Petbrosia bag. Seriously.  They come running.

Petbrosia is a mail order, I guess you can say "subscription box" of pet food for your dog or cat.  When you first sign up, you put in the information about your pet and it determines which food would be best for your pet and it tells you how often you should receive a box.  At that point, you can choose to go by their recommendations or just order a box.

As you can see from Miss Fatty Pants up there on the left, aka Ellie, she is a lover of food.  She has no issues chowing down and finishing a bowl.  Kenevil on the other hand, on the right, is a picker.  Because of this I have to leave the food down and Miss Fatty Pants, gets fatter.

I took the "test" for Ellie, because I figured she would be the one eating the most!  So here is her assessment:

Assessment

  • Ellie's diet has optimal protein levels, few calories, and lower fat for an aging Labrador Retriever
  • Ellie's Body Condition Score is over 5.5 so her blend contains added L-Carnitine to help burn fat to promote a healthy weight.
  • Ellie's recommended calories per day reflect being spayed.
And the recommended shipment schedule. They know how much Ellie weighs.  They know her breed type. They also know her age and activity level. Because of this they can formulate how much food she needs delivered and when!

Grain-Free Salmon
Nutrition Plan
20 lbs $67.99
Auto-ships FREE every 6 weeks
I know what you are thinking. Oh lordy! $68 every month and a half. Let's break that down.  That is 42 days, so less than $2 a day.   That isn't a lot folks. Also, salmon is fantastic for dogs!  Miss Fatty Pants should only be eating about 2 cups a day.  That 20lb bag will be perfect!

Also, this food is REALLY high quality. Lots of food you get out there today are full of fillers.  Most foods I see on the shelves, the food ingredient listed is corn. A grain.  Last I checked, dogs like meat.  Here are the first few ingredients in the Salmon food:

Salmon, Chick Pea Flour, Sweet Potato, Menhaden Fish Meal, Pinto Bean Flour, Navy Bean Flour, Navy Beans Flour, Peas, Salmon Meal, Menhaden fish Meal, Spray Dried Egg, Green Beans, Pea Protein, Carrots

You know what they have in common?   I can pronounce them. I can read them. AND none of them make me say EW. With this being salmon that I tried, the main ingredient is salmon. You can DEFINITELY tell that when you open the bag!  Watch out!  It DOES smell like fish! Here is a comparison link for Petbrosia and other pet foods.
The pellets of food are rather small.  When you switch your dog food you need to do it GRADUALLY.  If not, be ready for some upset tummies! (Trust me on this one. I used to work at a pet store. NOT fun with puppies and "bathroom" issues)
If you would like to try some for yourself they have given me a coupon code for you to save $10 off your first order. Head over to Petbrosia.com and key in BRV810 in the coupon code field.

They have also allowed me to giveaway a free three pound bag to one lucky reader! (Lower 48 US states only.  Sorry-no Alaska or Hawaii! )  Speaking of shipping, you get your order in 2-5 business days! Mine was VERY fast!  So enter below and good luck!  FYI-please use an email you check on a regular basis.  If after 48 hours I don't hear from you I will choose another winner!

Techno Gears Marble Mania Velocity 2.0 REVIEW!

THIS.WAS.AMAZING.

Aidan is really big into building blocks right now. When I saw this, I knew it would be a huge hit and it was. Be warned...massive amount of pictures  (and videos) up ahead.

See that up there?  That is what I got to build.  That is the companies image.  The job now was to see if we could do it ourselves.  The toy is rated 8 and up, so I knew I would be doing most of the work.

We sat down and prepared ourselves...and ate pizza.
The first task is dividing all the parts. You need a LARGE area. There are over 300 pieces.  It takes a lot of room to separate and THEN the toy itself it wide.  My little kitchen table was cramped, but we made it work.
I really love how colorful everything is!  The orange and green really pop!
Now, see these little blue guys here? MOST ANNOYING PIECES EVER. There is definitely a learning curve to using them.  First few ones I wanted to chuck them across the room.

I kept going though...and going.  This took me a LONG time to put together. A couple of hours maybe from opening the box to finishing?  I didn't actually time it, but it was well past lunch time when we were done.  DO NOT LET THAT SCARE YOU. It was totally worth it and I would do it again!
Other than the annoying learning curve with the blue clips, that orange spoked piece with the handle likes to fall off.  It is right on the front so it is super easy to pop back on. I think the kids got overly enthusiastic about turning the wheel.

So here is our finished product!  What do you think? I think it looks FANTASTIC!!!

Super cool lift to raise the marbles.  It took a bit to get it put together correctly.

GAH!  Her face!  She LOVES this.

All three kids love it so much I had to give it a permanent spot in the dining room on the table. Every day someone is running in there to play with it, and at night I am searching for the marbles!

So here are a couple of videos.  I HAVE fixed that one part that got stuck.  Again, it was those darn blue clip pieces!  I managed to get the ramp fixed. I don't have to push it down anymore!

See?  SUPER FUN!!  I am totally looking into their other toys now!
